Won.net
A rather serious-looking site for gaming.Nevertheless, it serves up quite a healthy dose; a variety of fun and games, in an organised no-nonsense fashion. Not only does it have some proprietary games that are written in Java or created using Shockwave (such as the absolutely groovy Austin Powers triviathon!), it also links you up to play third party games (such as Quake and Half Life). This reviewer was delighted also to find that it hosts games by Hoyle as well, which are card and board games fast being cast into oblivion (such as checkers, battleship etc.). Certainly the find we’ve been looking for. On Win.net, you can also look out for tournaments if you want to compete in a game or two, or even shop. We found the news tab to be quite informative as well, where different types of news can be found, such as top stories of the day, industry news, gaming news as well as hardware news, can be found. There is also a "Prima Strategy Guides", which is a far-reaching list (some with preambles) on available strategy games in the market. Although a little slow at times, even on our ISDN (64Kbps) line, it is bearable.I recommend a definite bookmark on this site.
coolhot.com
It seemed to take forever for someone to write a playable online mahjong game that has understandable lingo that does not end up sounding like a "gwailo" (foreigner) speaking Chinese. Well, wait no more, for Coolhot offers what must be - to this reviewer at least - an answer to her incessant hours of increasingly financially taxing games with her more than mahjong-astute friends. And it’s not only for mahjong addicts, because CoolHot offers five categories of games, comprising Action & Strategy games, adventure games, card and board games such as checkers and even some casino games, sports games and for fatbrains and they have a category just for you, called Puzzles & Trivia. We clicked on some of the sites and not all were operational. Nevertheless, the interface for the mahjong game (which you have to download the client to play) is very well designed, and best of all, there’s seldom a lag! Furthermore, Coolhot.com is affiliated with two other popular online gaming sites: Uproar and GameStorm. Definitely a one-stop site for those who want all play and no lag!
Wipeout3.com
I have not played the game WipeOut (which is a futuristic car racing that is reputed to be at heart-stopping pace) but the site is enough to make anyone want to try it. These guys are certainly out to please. Although the site took quite some time to load, what awaits you is quite worth it, although we must admit that it takes some getting used to. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the soon-to-be released game (which is described as an "Extreme Gravity Combat Racer") but if you have never played it before, you (like this reviewer) can get a little lost. But if you’re already into the game, this is the site you want to bookmark to keep yourself updated on developments.
Skirmisher.com
An online gaming magazine, Skirmisher covers a broad range of gaming interests and gives special attention to collectible card games, roleplaying games, and tactical-level and tabletop rules. There is quite an elaborate array of games you can choose to read about, from RPGs to card games, and even on other books or periodicals on gaming, such as Dragon Magazine and Serendipity’s Circle. They also have sporadic picks of preferred games. Also on this site is its online gamestore, as well as a very good resource called the Game Designer’s Toolbox, especially for those of you who like to design your own games, modify existing games, or create scenarios for roleplaying or other games. However, be warned as this is a magazine for hardcore RPG players and card gamers, so newbies may find it a tad dry. Don’t forget to check out the Previews section for games set to make their debut soon.
GamingPlanet.com
Only for avid online gamers, this site may appear a little tacky to those used to the increasingly impressive and sophisticated-looking pages on the Net today, but it sure is handy. Here is where you’ll find all the latest demos up for downloading, and it’s constantly updated as well. What’s great here is that they don’t link you up to the parent site itself, where you can just download directly from one single site. More importantly, here is where you’ll find a list of servers such as Def-con, QuakeWorld, Wireplay and many more, which you can link up to for instant gaming. For PSX and Sega maniacs, there is a section here for console gaming, and for those who like to wile away the hours playing games created using Macromedia’s Shockwave, a very comprehensive list is available at your disposal on Gamingplanet.

TeenWorld Online
TeenWorld Online was founded in 1995 as one of the very first cyber-community web sites. This site is a teenage Internet group completely run by teenagers for teenagers. They are headquartered in Penang and are a voluntary, non-profit site.Currently undergoing some modifications and changes to its approach, the site is nevertheless well structured and planned.Sporting simple but catchy colours, they offer postcards to send to you friends, online discussions and forums with teens posting their opinions, ideas and sharing with one another.Seeing that the future or wired culture will be handled by the youth, what better way than to introduce them to managing their own community of connectivity. From advice, guidence and tips that have been posted there it would seem that more volounteers are needed help this e-community of wired teens to come alive again. The community has a lot going for it.If only more people contributed their efforts then we could see some lively activity once again.
Art And Design
Crazy Cards Design
Just when you thought fashion designers that have web sites, will go all out to publicise and promote the many dizzy designs for each season, well Todd Oldham offers a slightly interesting treat instead. Here, he provides surfers with an avenue to create electronic cards that you can send to your cyber-pals. The website allows surfers to customise the background and even add animation to adorn the e-cards. Otherwise it’s an exploratory feast and you can open your eyes to the latest designs from Todd’s Fall 1999 collection and click on the links to his favourite music and movies websites.
Design Labs
Bauda seems to be an accomplished design house with all the right hooks and the discerning clientele flocking to their headquarters for advice and help. Doing wonderful album covers for Swing Out Sister, Holly Cole and Kurt Elling - they are one force to be reckoned with. They believe that great design reaches out and touches someone’s heart. On the top left corner of Bauda’s screen you’ll find circles with numbers in them from 1 to 3 and ZG. Click on the number 3 and that is where you want to view Bauda’s respectable pieces that have won them fame. Click on the previous works and be enticed by more album covers from Marilyn Manson. The ZG circle presents art-worthy book covers necessary if you are.
Great Galleries
The famous Tate Gallery in London has an eclectic spread of art pieces from the polished masters to the present day abstract artists. Here you can be served with a wealth of information pertaining to the gallery exhibits and even try out the online collections yourself. A really comprehensive range of art exhibits awaits you and The Oppe Collection is worth every bit of your surfing time and money. An interesting area on the main page is the link to the Abracadabra Collection where you meet all the new-fangled, young and budding artists. Descriptive literature about each artist ensures that you know their art focus and the reasons why the live and breathe art. You could spend hours in here just browsing at the tons of art pieces for the online collection. Phew! Enough said.
The Master
This beautifully conceptualised website compliments the posthumous works of the master himself, Vincent Van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses other works from artists, however this web page doesn’t include them. Peek into the lifestyle of Van Gogh, his tragic times and learn about his upbringing that may have drove him mad to the end. Both a cinch and a joy to navigate, the illustrations and the supporting literature throws one into a vicarious experience, and soon we feel the melancholic world of this renowned master that the world over has come to enjoy. Enigmati.
Weird Art
Most people would think that art in the olden days belonged to the masters and the current artworks today are trash and insipid. The people of ZoneZero have put together a weird mix of abstract and ordinary mediums that soon twists your mindset and forces you to think different. Paul Biddle shows off his unconventional ideas by using junk that he encounters in abandoned garages and disused buildings. Cristina Garcia is proud with her showcase of "Children" and their simple innocent nature that we often take for granted. However, her pictures convey a very different, if not chilling semiotic. Rommert Boonstra has an equally uncanny collection of so-called "The History of Forgetting" pictures that feature a world without time and rules. More often you’ll be more quizzical than suitably entertained, but as art thrives today, there are no hard and fast rules but the only tool you’ll ever need is "Appreciation".
Perfect Photos
Africa, Australia, America, Asia or Europe - Yes, choose one of these continents to explore the world of Alex Seivers’ stunning photographic pieces. The Internet has made it possible for photographers like Alex to connect with surfers around the world and educate them on the world events that are happening or the different cultures of many races. Alex is a well-travelled photographer who has faced the sweltering heat of the Silk Road and the rough Australian outback. Alex does a wonderful job at capturing profiles of people and in their natural surrounding, be it a rustic village or a cottage on a snowy mountaintop. Alex’s webpage makes surfing such a breeze and never will one get lost, rather be lost in the magical world of captivating photos.
Computers
The Remidi Project
The Remedi Project is a Shockwave-powered extravaganza created by Web artists/programmers/philosophers who believe that there are benefits to be gained by "abandoning preconceptions about how to communicate on the Web." It’s not clear that they’ve done that. After all, a Shockwave site is not exactly revolutionary. But the art, animation, and interactivity are of an extremely high, if undirected, quality. In other words, it’s a multimedia "trip."
Matrox Magnificence
I took a look at Matrox's homepage for some information on the uber-cool Millennium G400 Series of 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator. The site itself has a simple and elegant design, which is great for fast downloading times. It was also quite informative, particularly pertaining to lip-smacking details of the G400's 256-bit DualBus Architecture and one of its most sought-after feature: Hardware Bump-mapping. The card is also capable of DualHead display and has Vibrant Colour Quality2 technologies. Thanks to a whole host of links to technical stuff, demos, portable documents, independent reviews and other relevant pages, we were able to read up quite a lot on this card. If you can't understand some of the jargon, don't fret, as they've even included a G400 glossary. However, you'll need Adobe's Acrobat reader to enjoy the generous amount of information. One thing the site should also provide is info on the file sizes for those PDF files so that surfers can estimate how long each download will take.
Sony Vaio
Sure, it runs on an outdated processor. Sure, it has only a 10.4-inch screen. And sure, it doesn’t come with built-in CD-ROM. So what? It—the Sony VAIO 505, that is - is still hands-down the best-looking notebook computer you can buy. Not even an inch thick when closed, the notebook looks as though it were designed by the same folks who make compact cosmetic cases. If your chief goal in owning a notebook is to have associates and clients say "ooooh" whenever you open it, then this is the notebook for you. See the Sony VAIO 505 and Sony’s other style-over-substance computers here.
MetaCrawler
MetaCrawler, like many Internet search services, was started by some enterprising university folks - this time, at the University of Washington. The service is now owned by Go2Net. When you search with MetaCrawler, it queries a number of services all at one time, including Alta Vista, Lycos, InfoSeek, and Yahoo! Web site searches are translated, when necessary, to use the operators allowed by the individual search engines. Search results are "confidence scored" to help you evaluate the information further. You can also search newsgroups, although it’s a little more difficult for MetaCrawler to precisely translate newsgroup queries.
Pro Launch
Are you bored stiff with your start page? Craving a little variety? How about a little variety that rewardss you for providing your like and dislikes with frequent flyer miles or discounts on clothes and CDs? With personal preference data becoming more and more popular as an effective marketing tool, you’re likely to see a lot more of these types of offers in the future. With Pro Launch, you tell the site your personal interests, hobbies and so on, and every time you launch your browser, you are presented with a different site that coincides with your interests. Take the time to surf these sites and you’ll rack up "points," which can then be redeemed for tangible goods.
Macinstein
Macinstein bills itself as the only Macintosh-specific search engine, and indeed, it is a great resource for people who use Macs. It’s especially handy when you’re looking for specific hardware or software. Just type in a word like "monitors"—no need to type in Apple or Macintosh - and you find monitors made for your platform. The site also tracks Apple stock quotes and news and maintains links to other Mac-specific sites and publications.
GirlGeeks
n real English, a "geek" is an especially perverse performer; a circus geek, for example, is usually some sideshow tent denizen who bites the heads off live chickens. So we’re not exactly crazy about the name of GirlGeeks?, a site devoted to telling the stories of the computer industry’s leading female players. But we DO like the idea. Read bios, listen to interviews, and learn about upcoming television and radio specials celebrating these high-tech priestesses. And, of course, hope that the industry churns out a few more of them.
Much more coming!!!
